December News

Hello Learning commons friends,

Christmas and the Advent season are almost here, and the sunshine and colder temperatures have created the perfect time to snuggle up in your armchair with an audiobook, e book or good old fashioned hard copy,  and read around the hearth.   We prepare for the coming of our Saviour,  with the anticipation of good news!

News articles from the learning commons this month.  Natalie shares more about how to use our commons before purchasing curriculum.  Read more here.  Pippa shares on some ideas about social media and parenting teens.  Read more here.

We hope to highlight a few of our favourite reads and possible ideas for Christmas gatherings!

From our E library we have a new special collection in our E library just for holiday books.  Please check out this link here to find books on Christmas.

A great book to read to your young elementary students (or have them read themselves) is “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” by  Barbara Robinson. Enjoy the laughs and the fun with the Herdmans “the worst kids in the history of the world”. You can find this on audio in our Overdrive Library

Three Christmas classics for your older students are The Gift of the Magi ( audio book format on Overdrive and here in ebook format), A Christmas Carol ( available in several different versions through L4U as well as here on Overdrive) and Little Women – set during the Christmas period (audiobook format on Overdrive and here in ebook format).

A few Christmas picture book ideas are The Candymaker’s Gift by Helen Haidle which is found on L4U here.  Another great Christmas message is found in Ted Dekker’s The Drummer Boy,  which takes a classic tale and adds a modern twist to it; available here on Overdrive.

We also have many Christmas activity books for your family, from Devotions to Crafts. Here are just a few… The Family Book of Advent by Carol Garborg is available on OverdriveChristmas Fun by Linda Standke is also available on OverdriveChristmas Crafts around the World by Judy A. Sadler in L4U and Hugs from HeavenThe Christmas Story by GA Meyers also in L4U.

Secret Santa It’s that time of year again! For those of you that have never played this game with HCOS/NING, Secret Santa is a fun card/gift exchange. Students, parents or staff commit to sending someone a card/gift worth $5 or less and send Erin (Forum and Ning moderator) your mailing address in a private message. At the beginning of December she will scramble the names and send you the name and address of the person that you will be sending a card/gift to. All card/gifts should be sent out by December 12 so that it reaches the recipient on time. We (HCOS/NING) are not responsible for any late or damaged card/gifts, if you want to play you are agreeing to commit to send a card/gift, and get one if return. Spread the word, the more people we get the more fun it is. Erin will stop accepting names on Nov 30th. =) Feel free to message her with any questions, eduncan@onlineschool.ca.  Or go to this Ning link

If you would like something to be purchased for our learning commons please add your suggestions to this place.

As we anticipate the birth of our Saviour and plan our family events,  the learning commons wanted to take some time to thank you all for your patronage!  We love serving you and look forward to a new year full of wonderful learning events.

The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Luke 1:35

Blessings from the learning commons team!
