Book clubs 2015!

Welcome to a new school year full of literacy excitement!

Starting this October 2015 we have 6 book clubs!

Grade 6/7 Book club facilitator Kari Bell.

Join me, Kari Bell for a monthly book club. We will be reading books nominated for the Young Readers Choice Awards Junior Division in the Pacific Northwest Library Association. This club will encourage reading, discussion, blogging and technology. Students will vote for their favourite book.

Book Club dates and time: 12:30 Pacific Standard Time (1:30 Mountain time) on the third Wednesday of the month.

Oct 14, Nov 18, Dec 16, Jan 20, Feb 17, Mar 16, April 13, May 18

Cost: $45 for HCOS students $50 for General Community Students

Students will be responsible for: getting a copy of the monthly book (Library or purchase); read or listen to it; communicating with classmates on blog; participation during book club.

Reading Buddies K-3 with Pippa Davies

Students in Kindergarten to Gr.3 and their reading buddies are invited to come and join Pippa Davies HCS teacher librarian share the joys of reading picture books, and inquiry based learning.  Pippa will incorporate picture books, puppets and early primary research databases (Pebble Go, Explora and Reading Eggs) to get your younger students reading, listening, learning nursery rhymes and writing their first research project based on learning outcomes in these years. Sessions will be run on  Blackboard classroom in the mornings. The sessions will run for about an hour starting at 11 am.  Set up will be the first ten minutes and then 40 minutes of reading time, songs, sharing, and puppets.
Grab your coffee and your kids and come and read with Pippa.
Picture books read will include Canadian, American and British fiction and non fiction.
Puppets/rhymes and songs will also be shared.

Dates: camps on Wednesdays at 11.15 PAC: Sign in 15 minutes early to get ready.

Virtual Book Club with Kathy Kanda: Grades 9-12.
 Attention Grade 9-12 students! Join Literature Circles for a focused study of Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. This group will meet once a week for 6 weeks to discuss the book. Students are not required to read the book ahead of time, as each week they will read a small part and complete a short assignment to share with the rest of the “circle”. Meetings will be held in Google Hangouts. (a computer or chromebook, a google account, microphone and speakers are required) Participation in this club meets many Language Arts outcomes and some Social Studies outcomes.

Attention Grade 79 students! Join Literature Circles for a focused study of The Outlaws of Sherwood by Robin McKinley. This group will meet once a week for 6 weeks to discuss the book. Students are not required to read the book ahead of time, as each week they will read a small part and complete a short assignment to share with the rest of the “circle”. Meetings will be held in Google Hangouts. (a computer or Chromebook, a google account, microphone and speakers are required) Participation in this club meets many Language Arts outcomes and some Social Studies outcomes.

Grade 4/5 Book club- April McLeod.

I am so excited to have another year of the Grade 4 and 5 Virtual Book Club. I have taken a few favourites from years’ past and added in a few more to bring an awesome line up of amazing books. We will meet to share about the book we will have read each month and have the opportunity to participate in Kid Blog that will have novel study questions, activities, and opportunities to build community and writing skills. We had over 300 posts on our blog last year and it was fantastic to see the students take part. Hope your grade 4 or 5 student will join us for a super fun year of reading! Our meetings will be done virtually.

Meeting Dates: October 17 – Cat Boy, November 13 – Tales of Despereaux, December 11 – The Reluctant Deckhand, January 22- The Cricket in Times Square, February 19 – Student choice March 18th, The Wind, the Road and the Way, April 22 – The Breadwinner, May 27th Student vote.
