Week three was so much fun for STEAM learning with our grade 2 reading buddies
Our students displayed creativity, imagination and discussion inspired by the Bible passage “For in Him we live and move and have our being.” Acts 17:28 and the story The Three Little Pigs from Overdrive E library. We also watched and sang the Bible song The Wise Man Built His House.
Questions were scaffolded for guided inquiry and research. We tackled these questions:
Which little pig had the right house? How do you know? Have you ever been in a big storm/earthquake/natural disaster. How did you feel? How do we build our houses in BC, or say Quebec? Do you think this is the right way to build our homes based on the three pigs experience? Give reasons. How should we build our houses to withstand force? How can we make our houses more secure to withstand incredible force? Where does God say we need to build our homes? I am excited to see the activities ensuing from these suggested ideas.
Students draw or retell The Three Little Pigs using puppets from a BC perspective.
Or do this STEM lesson
Or this one
Today Nov 9th we shared our creations and the students had time to ask questions. Some of our students used straws, paper, wood, popsicle sticks and lego or domino blocks to make their houses. We then watched in action as one of our students used the force of the big bad wolf with the means of a hair dryer to see the effects of her building. We discussed the results with great questions and thoughts on how force can be exerted and what can withstand such force. Of course living in BC versus living in Quebec had its different consequences.
After this debate we listened to The True Story of the Three Little Pigs and enjoyed another debate on the verity of one persons point of view. It was good to hear how the truth can be subverted depending on who was sharing it. More to follow next time 🙂
I am having fun with my STEAM buddies. They are showing me that its okay to just have fun learning and asking questions!
