500th Anniversary of the Reformation!

Today is special, and it’s not because it’s Halloween!  Today marks the 500th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation!  This would be a great time to share this rich history with your children.

There were many factors that brought about the Reformation, which began in Germany reflin 1517.  It is often said that it started with Martin Luther’s Ninety-Five Theses, which he nailed to the door of the church.  Luther questioned the corrupt practices of the Catholic Church and advanced the belief that the Bible is the supreme religious authority (Sola Scriptura). Luther contended that salvation is not earned by good deeds, but is the gift of grace through faith in Christ Jesus. This thinking brought about separation from the Catholic church and the creation of Protestant churches.

There is so much to learn from history about the Reformers who came before Luther and followed after, such as John Wycliffe, John Calvin, Thomas Cranmer, and John Knox , to name a few. It is also interesting to learn how the invention of the Gutenberg printing press aided this movement and made it possible for people to read the Bible for themselves. Take some time to read about this amazing time in our Church history!
