What are the Core Competencies all about?  Here is a brief description:

Read-Aloud Books about Making Mistakes & Resilience; and Persistence and Hard Work

Cover of Ada Twist, Scientist

The creators of the New York Times bestselling picture books Rosie Revere, Engineer and Iggy Peck, Architect are back with a story about the power of curiosity in the hands of a child who is on a mission to use science to understand her world. Ada Twist, Scientist, from powerhouse team Andrea Beaty and David Roberts, is a celebration of STEM, perseverance, and passion.

Like her classmates, builder Iggy and inventor Rosie, scientist Ada, a character of color, has a boundless imagination and has always been hopelessly curious. Why are there pointy things stuck to a rose? Why are there hairs growing inside your nose? When her house fills with a horrific, toe-curling smell, Ada knows it’s up to her to find the source. Not afraid of failure, she embarks on a fact-finding mission and conducts scientific experiments, all in the name of discovery. But, this time, her experiments lead to even more stink and get her into trouble!

Inspired by real-life makers such as Ada Lovelace and Marie Curie, Ada Twist, Scientist champions girl power and women scientists, and brings welcome diversity to picture books about girls in science. Touching on themes of never giving up and problem solving, Ada comes to learn that her questions might not always lead to answers, but rather to more questions. She may never find the source of the stink, but with a supportive family and the space to figure it out, she’ll be able to feed her curiosity in the ways a young scientist should.

Iggy Peck and Rosie Revere have earned their places among the most beloved children’s characters, and they have inspired countless kids and adults to follow their dreams and passions. Now in her own charming and witty picture book, determined Ada Twist, with her boundless curiosity for science and love of the question “Why?,” is destined to join these two favorites. The book is the perfect tool to remind both young girls and women that they have the intelligence and perseverance to achieve their dreams.

Cover of The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes

The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes by Mark Pett
Beatrice Bottomwell has NEVER (not once!) made a mistake…
Meet Beatrice Bottomwell: a nine-year-old girl who has never (not once!) made a mistake. She never forgets her math homework, she never wears mismatched socks, and she ALWAYS wins the yearly talent show at school. In fact, Beatrice holds the record of perfection in her hometown, where she is known as The Girl Who Never Makes Mistakes. Life for Beatrice is sailing along pretty smoothly until she does the unthinkable–she makes her first mistake. And in a very public way!

Cover of Ish
Features an audio read-along! A creative spirit learns that thinking “ish-ly” is far more wonderful than “getting it right” in this gentle new fable from the creator of the award-winning picture book THE DOT. Ramon loved to draw. Anytime. Anything. Anywhere. Drawing is what Ramon does. It¹s what makes him happy. But in one split second, all that changes. A single reckless remark by Ramon’s older brother, Leon, turns Ramon’s carefree sketches into joyless struggles. Luckily for Ramon, though, his little sister, Marisol, sees the world differently. She opens his eyes to something a lot more valuable than getting things just “right.” Combining the spareness of fable with the potency of parable, Peter Reynolds shines a bright beam of light on the need to kindle and tend our creative flames with care.

Cover of Flight School

Flight School by Lita Judge

A persevering penguin is determined to fly in this adorably inspiring picture book from the creator of Red Hat and Red Sled.  Although little Penguin has the soul of an eagle, his body wasn’t built to soar. But Penguin has an irrepressible spirit, and he adamantly follows his dreams to flip, flap, fly! Even if he needs a little help with the technical parts, this penguin is ready to live on the wind.

Cover image for The Dot

The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds

Features an audio read-along! With a simple, witty story and free-spirited illustrations, Peter H. Reynolds entices even the stubbornly uncreative among us to make a mark—and follow where it takes us. Her teacher smiled. “Just make a mark and see where it takes you.” Art class is over, but Vashti is sitting glued to her chair in front of a blank piece of paper. The words of her teacher are a gentle invitation to express herself. But Vashti can’t draw—she’s no artist. To prove her point, Vashti jabs at a blank sheet of paper to make an unremarkable and angry mark. “There!” she says. That one little dot marks the beginning of Vashti’s journey of surprise and self-discovery. That special moment is the core of Peter H. Reynolds’s delicate fable about the creative spirit in all of us.

Cover of Sky Color
Sky Color by Peter H. Reynolds

Features an audio read-along! The sky’s no limit as the author-illustrator of The Dot and Ish winds up his Creatrilogy with a whimsical tale about seeing the world a new way. Marisol loves to paint. So when her teacher asks her to help make a mural for the school library, she can’t wait to begin! But how can Marisol make a sky without blue paint? After gazing out the bus window and watching from her porch as day turns into night, she closes her eyes and starts to dream. . . . From the award-winning Peter H. Reynolds comes a gentle, playful reminder that if we keep our hearts open and look beyond the expected, creative inspiration will come.

Cover image for Rosie Revere, Engineer

Rosie Revere, Engineer by Andrea Beaty

Rosie may seem quiet during the day, but at night she’s a brilliant inventor of gizmos and gadgets who dreams of becoming a great engineer. When her great-great-aunt Rose (Rosie the Riveter) comes for a visit and mentions her one unfinished goal—to fly—Rosie sets to work building a contraption to make her aunt’s dream come true. But when her contraption doesn’t fly but rather hovers for a moment and then crashes, Rosie deems the invention a failure. On the contrary, Aunt Rose insists that Rosie’s contraption was a raging success: you can only truly fail, she explains, if you quit.

Cover of Iggy Peck, Architect
Iggy Peck, Architect by Andrea Beaty

Meet Iggy Peck—creative, independent, and not afraid to express himself! In the spirit of David Shannon’s No, David and Rosemary Wells’s Noisy Nora, Iggy Peck will delight readers looking for irreverent, inspired fun. Iggy has one passion: building. His parents are proud of his fabulous creations, though they’re sometimes surprised by his materials—who could forget the tower he built of dirty diapers? When his second-grade teacher declares her dislike of architecture, Iggy faces a challenge. He loves building too much to give it up! With Andrea Beaty’s irresistible rhyming text and David Roberts’s puckish illustrations, this book will charm creative kids everywhere, and amuse their sometimes bewildered parents.

Cover of The Most Magnificent Thing

A little girl and her canine assistant set out to make the most magnificent thing. But after much hard work, the end result is not what the girl had in mind. Frustrated, she quits. Her assistant suggests a long walk, and as they walk, it slowly becomes clear what the girl needs to do to succeed. A charming story that will give kids the most magnificent thing: perspective!

Cover of The Marvelous Thing That Came from a Spring

The Marvelous Thing That Came from a Spring: The Accidental Invention of the Toy That Swept the Nation

(With Audio Recording) by Gilbert Ford

With magnificent dioramic illustrations, Gilbert Ford captures the joy, creativity, and determination behind the invention of an iconic, one-of-a-kind toy: the Slinky!  One day, a spring fell from the desk of Richard James, an engineer, and a dreamer. Its coils took a walk…and so did Richard’s imagination. He knew right away that he had stumbled onto something marvelous.

With the help of his wife, Betty, Richard took this ordinary spring and turned it into a plaything. But it wasn’t just any old trinket—it was a Slinky, and it would become one of the most popular toys in American history.

Cover of Rosie Revere's Big Project Book for Bold Engineers

by Andrea Beaty
Embark on an adventure of personal creativity and invention with fan favorite Rosie Revere! This activity book features art from the picture book Rosie Revere, Engineer and will inspire young readers with activities of all kinds. Kids will have the chance to design a better bicycle, build a simple catapult, construct a solar oven, and more! This empowering activity book will teach problem-solving and creative-thinking skills crucial to STEM fields while also providing opportunities for its readers to try new things and, sometimes, to fail. As the picture book so brilliantly showed hundreds of thousands of young readers, flops are an inevitable part of success and something to be celebrated rather than feared. Created by Andrea Beaty and David Roberts, the same New York Times bestselling team who brought us Rosie Revere, Iggy Peck, and Ada Twist, this activity book will be perfect for old and new fans alike!

A cool idea with a big splash   You know the Super Soaker. It’s one of top twenty toys of all time. And it was invented entirely by accident. Trying to create a new cooling system for rockets, impressive inventor Lonnie Johnson instead created the mechanics for the iconic toy.   A love for rockets, robots, inventions, and a mind for creativity began early in Lonnie Johnson’s life. Growing up in a house full of brothers and sisters, persistence and a passion for problem-solving became the cornerstone for a career as an engineer and his work with NASA. But it is his invention of the Super Soaker water gun that has made his most memorable splash with kids and adults.

Canadian Historical Fiction, Anyone?

Karen Autio is a local author of a trilogy of historical novels for young readers.

Here’s a snapshot of each historical novel, available now in our L4U Physical Library:

Second-WatchCoverSecond Watch – An immigrant story of hardship and hope, faith, and family. In May 1914, when the Finnish Lutheran Mäki family of Port Arthur, Ontario, finally cobbles together enough for passage to Finland on the Empress of Ireland, they never dreamed it would be the steamship’s final voyage, wrecking in the St. Lawrence River.

Saaras Passage low res cover

Saara’s Passage – After surviving one of the worst marine disasters in Canadian history, Saara Mäki still feels a little at sea. “Saara, your life has been spared for a purpose.” But all this 12-year-old girl can see is washing dishes and peeling potatoes. That is, until Aunt Marja contracts tuberculosis and must move a thousand miles away to the Toronto sanatorium, leaving Baby Sanni behind with Saara’s family. S\aara’s next passage takes her into entirely unfamiliar waters.

Sabotage_cover low res

Sabotage – The courage and wits of siblings Saara and John Mäki are put to the test when German spies sabotage Canada’s war effort in Port Arthur in 1915. Told by both Saara and John, this final book in the trilogy takes readers into a real-life world of espionage, sabotage, and paranoia. The story involves immigration, discriminatory policies of the Canadian government, internment of enemy aliens, treatment of minority groups, and human rights, all of which lead students into understanding different perspectives and making ethical judgments.

All three titles are published by Sono Nis Press (www.sononis.com) and were finalists for awards including the Arthur Ellis Award for Best Juvenile/YA Crime Book, Manitoba Young Readers’ Choice Award, and the BC Chocolate Lily Book Award.

Each of Karen’s books has a free downloadable Teacher’s Guide or Student Activity Guide, available through her website:  http://www.karenautio.com/SchoolVisits.html.

Term 3 is well under way.  Does your Grade 7 student need to finish up that final unit in science?  Our newest Grade 7 Digital Unit Study Kits may be just what you are looking for!

Each kit focuses on one of the Big Ideas in BC’s New Curriculum, so for each grade and subject, you’ll notice that we provide a variety of kits.  Complete some, complete them all … they’re designed to fit seamlessly into your overall student learning plan.

In each of our Digital Unit Study kits, you will be provided with suggested books from the HCS Overdrive E-Library, (you’ll need your login information to access), videos to watch, and activities to share with your child.  These kits are all about student choice and enabling your student to focus on areas where they have the most interest.  Therefore, you will not be required to complete all activities listed under each key question, instead, you will be able to choose activities which most appeal to you and your child.

Each key question featured in the unit will include recommendations on how many activities to complete in order to fully address the curriculum content and competencies. Finally, each activity will have icons showing which competencies of BC’s new curriculum the activity addresses.
