Read Around the World Event


Welcome to the Read Around the World Book Club!  Join Pippa Davies, teacher librarian, as she celebrates beautiful picture books from around the world, during two sessions in March.  Each week we will read books from different parts of the world, celebrating all of the continents.  Here is a list to get you started on your reading using Overdrive e books.  Parents can help their students by starting a passport for reading around the world. More activities can be found on this page to help support your student’s reading.   Then students can continue with their reading after the two weeks.   If they read 20 or more picture books from around the world by the end of March, they will be entered into a draw for a $50 Amazon gift certificate for more books!  Please register/s your student once they have completed their reading on this form.

Different Approaches to the New Unit Study Kits


The new unit studies are laid out differently from the old kits.  There are no daily lessons, which allows you to be flexible in how you approach the units, choosing the activities that work best for your student.

Here is an example of how two different families approached the Grade 2 Local Actions have Global Consequences Physical unit study.  One is a planned approach, the other is a more “plan as you go” approach. Life happens, so remember to be flexible when you are planning your own approach!

Planned Approach:

Cindy is the mom of three busy kids, in grades K, 2 and 4. She likes to have things planned out in advance so she can be prepared.  Cindy booked her unit studies for the year and knows when they will be arriving at her doorstep. She also ensured she had her passwords for L4U/Overdrive and the subscriptions saved!  A few days before she knows the kit will arrive, she took 2 hours one evening to map out her 6 week plan for this unit.

She downloaded and printed the parent guide from the Learning Commons website, https://hcslearningcommons.org/unit-study-resource-kits/.  Having the guide on the computer gives her quick access to the links provided.  Cindy likes to have her own paper copy of the guide so she can highlight videos and activities as she plans.

On the How to Use This Kit page of the guide, Cindy noted that the suggestion is to read all of the books, and watch 10 – 12 videos. Each section also noted how many activities to do.  There was a lot to choose from, so it felt a bit overwhelming, but Cindy got her highlighter ready!

Cindy created a 6 week daily plan, knowing there would likely be changes. She kept Fridays as a “catch up” day if they get behind. She aimed for 1 to 1.5 hours daily for the unit, depending on the activity chosen. She worked that into her daily schedule for all subjects. Cindy also used a Google doc to note what was done and shared it with her teacher so portfolios would be easier.

Week 2

Mary also has 3 kids in grades K, 2 and 4.  Here is her experience with the unit study:

Week 1

Hooray!  The kit came today and the kids are so excited!

Whoa,  there is so much to do…oh wait, we don’t have to do it all! We can pick the videos and activities we want as long as we do enough to cover the topics.  Kate has already picked out a few she wants to do! I better look up the guide online as there are a lot of links. I think I’ll keep my camera handy so I can take pictures of the projects as she’s working on them.

Just emailed our teacher for the subscription passwords so Kate can watch some videos.

We read Wants vs. Needs: A Place to Live,    Wants vs. Needs: Clothes and

Wants vs. Needs: Food and Drink. 

Kate had fun going through our closets! We donated clothes for the Service Activity.

She also chose to do My Extended Community (Technology Activity) blog which took all week to do.

Week 2

The kids caught colds so I was glad there were videos to watch!  Kate was able to open the links herself since my password is saved for Discovery  and Learn 360!

Kate made a Paper Mache Globe which took 3 days to complete.

She also did the Community Comparison Activity and learned about Ghana.

Instead of Care Kits for the Homeless we put together shoeboxes for Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child.

 

Week 4

This week we read Justine McKeen, Queen of Green and Three Cheers for Trees: A Book about our Carbon Footprint

We had some good conversations about recycling and Kate decided to make the string-covered vase. She also did Recycling Kid Art, and Caring for the Earth Story as a physical book;

Technology Time: Have fun exploring NASA’s Climate Kids website

She also watched Balltown: Environment (Discovery Education), Reading Rainbow Giving Thanks: A Native American Good Morning (Discovery Education), Reading Rainbow: Jack, the Seal, and the Sea (Learn 360) and Don’t Pollute: Berenstain Bears (Learn 360)

 

Week 5

We read Trash Magic: A Book About Recycling a Plastic Bottle and watched

A Future for Frogs (Learn 360) and Rainforests (Learn 360)

Activities this week: Simulated Oil Spill and report, which took 3 days to do.

Technology Time: Played Light it Right

 

Week 6

We read What’s Sprouting in My Trash: A Book about Composting

Kate did the Sandwich Bag Compost Experiment

And from the first section,  Kate made drawings  of 5 important rights:  United Nations Rights of the Child and played the The Fair Trade Game with her older sister.

As you can see, these are two very different approaches! Both work well for the families involved.  You may fall in between these two approaches…that’s great!  Make it your own!

We have created a Unit Study Planning Sheet for the unit studies which you can use as a place to start.  You have six weeks for the units and in some cases, you will be done sooner.  If you run out of time and have to send the kit back, you have the option of using the online guide for activities, or you can use the Digital unit and access eBooks to finish the unit!  Online guides

A Peek at New Kits!


How is your summer going? Lots of beach time, travel, visitors?  I hope it’s relaxing and rejuvenating for you and your family.  It’s hard to believe we are already into August!  Our Learning Commons team has been busy…very busy!  Preparing new kits and adding new resources to meet the new outcomes.  Here’s just a peek at few of the Kindergarten to Grade 3 units we now have on the shelves!  So EXCITING!!

 

You can view and download the parent guides in L4U  or on our web page: Unit Studies by Grade. We are adding more units so watch for more updates!

We will open bookings on Monday, August 15th!

New client codes/pins have been sent via email to all parents and teachers who have 2016/17 accounts in Encom. These emails were generated by L4U on Monday, so please check your junk folder if you don’t see them in your inbox. The old accounts have been deleted.

Items out

All items out are due back June 17th unless you arranged a renewal (no unit study kits will be renewed).  Please contact Kelly to arrange pickup: shipping@heritagechristian.ca

Unit Study kits:

  • If you have kits out, they are due back June 17th. They cannot be renewed over the summer.
  • Unit Study Kits are being redone to meet the new outcomes, so they cannot be booked over the summer OR for next year at this time.
  • We will announce the date they will be available to be booked in August, most likely August 15th.

Summer Loans

  • You can book curriculum, books and CDs/DVDs for the summer and next year, (but not unit study kits).
  • Last day to book items for the summer is June 17th.  Books will be shipped the following week.
  • Summer items will be due back in August.

Changes to Loans and Shipping

  • The Loan period is now 6 weeks as the new unit study kits will be shorter in length. You can use the materials for the full 6 weeks as shipping time is calculated outside of that time.
  • New limit of 35 books and 8 AV items out at one time per family.
  • Enrolled families now receive 16 FREE shipments (8 round trips) per school year (August – July)
  • Registered families now receive 10 Free Shipments (5 round trips) per school year (August –July)
  • Registered families will now have access to Overdrive, and most materials in L4U except MakerEd and Unit Study kits. Access to Digital kits and all guides is available here.

If you have moved – please contact either Kelly or myself with your new address as we do not get automatic updates from the office.  It’s so sad when an order goes to the wrong address and time is lost trying to get it back!!

April is Poetry/Writing Month!


Welcome to National Poetry Month!  To celebrate the love of writing we have a poetry competition happening on HCS Ning for students in both elementary and high school.  To find out more about the poetry competition check this group page here.  If you are not a member of Ning contact Erin Duncan our Ning moderator for your invite.  Ning is open to all students 13 years and older.

Ash Wednesday!


Today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lenten season.  Lent lasts for 46 days, ending on Holy Saturday, the 26th of March. The six Sundays in Lent are not counted among the forty days of lent because each Sunday represents a “mini-Easter”, a celebration of Jesus’ victory over sin and death.

This 40-day period reflects the suffering endured by Jesus when he fasted in the wilderness of the desert before beginning his ministry.

During his time in the desert he was tempted three times by Satan, and each time he overcame the temptation.

When he was then crucified, his disciples fasted, giving us the final fasting period of Lent during Holy Week.

For this reason, Christians tend to fast during Lent and on specific days in the Lenten calendar.

The Montessori Method; Maria Montessori

Author in Residence Program- Sigmund Brouwer

We have really enjoyed having Sigmund Brouwer share with our students some great writing tools of the trade in his author in residence program.  We are looking forward to more sessions in January.  These sessions will be one day only events, and the learning camp will be shared soon to the learning groups website.

Welcome to shorter days and more time to read by the light of the silvery moon.  Grab your students and find your classics whether on L4U or Overdrive E Library, and lets get reading!

To celebrate Drop everything and Read Day on October 26th,  we are celebrating one of my favourite author’s Beverley Cleary.  She has a lovely website which has some great literary resources.  To complement her website we have many of her resources in L4U which may be shipped to your home.   Don’t forget to DROP EVERYTHING and READ on October 26th 🙂

Understanding Syria Today by Michael Kapek on Overdrive e library

Understanding Syria Today is an accurate and contemporary presentation that explores the Middle Eastern nation of Syria with a focus on the country as it is today: current issues, culture, and lifestyle. Summer Reading Basics

Literacy skills are essential for student’s success, and we hope that by the end of third grade our students are understanding the written word, and reading with some fluency at grade level.  How do we make sure our students don’t fall behind?

As accountable parents and teachers we provide intervention where necessary, and try to close the gaps. Preventative factors are critically important in the early years if we want to make sure we don’t have to intervene.  Effective teaching instruction in the K-2 reading years is vital if we want to make sure our students gain the foundational skills needed for reading in the upper grades.

If we wait until our students show up in grades 4 and above, with discrepancies in their phonetic ability we are failing to prepare them for the high school years.  In grade 4 students should be reading books that have multi-syllable words.

Here are some summer reading tips for helping your younger K-2 student stay on task over the summer and beyond! Remember that for struggling students accelerating skill development to reach grade level expectations takes a high level of instructional intensity.  Offer lots of rewards and treats on a weekly basis!

1.  Log into our Overdrive E Library for some amazing picture books that now come with embedded audio content.  We have recently ordered many of the critically acclaimed Sonlight picture books.  If you have a student with reading difficulties make sure to turn on the Dyslexic font in the settings menu.  To find picture books go to our subject menu and click on Picture Books.

2.  Do daily practice with your Reading Eggs and RAZ Kids Subscription to ensure phonics, and reading comprehension is up to scratch.  Record your student reading at the beginning of the summer on RAZKids and then at the end of summer share with your teacher as a progress/assessment tool!  Contact Beth Johnson if you need to sign up for the coming year!

3.  Include multiple texts including manuals, graphs, infographics, video, and websites, signs and non-fiction to encourage your students’ wide interests.  Discover the awesome subscription Pebble Go for students K-4 to learn more about science and social studies.

4.  Play word games in the car on holiday.  Do you remember those old fashioned games like name the animal?

The Animal Name Game

Ages 6 and up: One person names an animal. Then each person in order has to name another animal (no repeating!) that starts with the last letter of the previous animal named. There are no winners or losers in this game. With older children, try the game with TV shows, or geographical categories such as cities or countries.

Twenty Questions

Ages 4 and up: One person secretly thinks of either an animal, mineral, or vegetable. The other players then take turns asking yes-or-no questions, such as “Can it fly?” or “Does it grow in the ground?” After the players have asked 20 questions, each player gets a chance to make a guess.

Telephone

Ages 4 and up: A child whispers a story to someone else in the car. That person whispers the same story — as close to a word-for-word recount as possible — to a third person, and so on. The last person to hear the story repeats it out loud so everyone can hear. Invariably, some of the story will have been lost in the translation, and the resulting garbled message usually inspires a good laugh.

The Alphabet Game

Ages 5 and up: One person chooses the right-hand side of the road, and someone else the left. Each player looks for letters of the alphabet that appear on signs or license plates on their side. The object of the game is to point out all the letters of the alphabet in order, from A to Z. The first person to spot the entire alphabet wins.

Help your student P.I.C.K. out the right book for their reading and interest level using this article for guidance!

If your student still needs intervention make sure to contact your teacher who can get your student the required scaffolding with diagnostic testing.  This method of intervention will help match your student to the right materials and his or her unique style of learning.  Feel free to contact me if you need suggestions for your student’s reading materials!

Using the Learning commons over the Summer!

As we look forward to a lovely summer break there are some important dates you need to take note of.

If you have not re-enrolled, ALL library items are due back in the library by June 18th, 2015 and you cannot book items for next year.

Booking for next year:
You can book now for next year, but the first open day you can book items for the new school year is September 4th. Please DO NOT book items in July or August! We do not ship during the summer, so you will be reminded to rebook.
1. The earliest you can book an item is dependent on your homeroom, which indicates your shipping days ie. HCOS2 is 2 shipping days, (you can see your homeroom in your Profile page when logged in).
2. Add your shipping days to the date of September 4th, which is the first open date, to find the earliest date you can actually book an item: ie. If you are in HCOS3 your earliest ship date would be September 7th.
3. This works for any date you are booking for. For example, if I want to book an item for the next day, but I am in HCOS5, the system will state it is not available because it takes 5 days to ship to me.
4. I would need to choose a date 5 days in the future. The system will offer other open dates; please be sure the option you choose is for the loan period of 49 days.
5. When booking unit study kits for the year, please remember there is a limit of 3 kits per family out at one time.

  • Please do not:
    Book items back to back; we will delete the extra bookings. An item can be renewed if no one else has a reserve on it.
    DO NOT book kits so that they overlap with other kits, which takes you over the 3 kit limit. We will ask you to rebook.
    We have these limits in place to ensure all of our families have equal access to the resources.

Library loans for the summer:
If you have re-enrolled, you have the option of taking out material over the summer:

If you enrolled recently you will be sent a client code and pin from L4U at the beginning of the month, (check your junk folder!)
Last date for ordering items for the summer is June 19th

All material will be due back in the library August 14th, no exceptions! We need to have all items in and ready to go for the new school year.
There is a limit of 30 books per family
And a limit of 1 unit study kit per family over the summer.
The library is closed for the month of July, and is on summer hours for August. We will arrange Canpar returns during the first week of August so they are received by August 14th.
