1.  Try Out a New Tool

Grammarly:  This online proofreading tool checks your text for grammar, punctuation, and style, and features a contextual spelling checker and plagiarism detector.  It is available as an add-on for Office, for Windows, and as a Chrome Extension.

2.  Follow a Facebook Page With a Little Humour

  • Grammar Girl:  This page is a good mix of light-hearted fun, and short, friendly tips to improve your writing. Grammar Girl makes complex grammar concepts simple with memory tricks to help you recall and apply those troublesome grammar rules.
  • The Grammar Police:  Because sometimes we need a bit of humour to engage our minds with grammar.  And yes, I just began and sentence with “because”.  Oh, and there again with “and”…


3.  Check Out Some Books in Overdrive

Reading and making in the Commons!

As a teacher I have always loved using a hook to create excitement,  and move production in the classroom.  As a teacher librarian my students in my reading buddies K-3 online class ask for extension activities.

This term we have shared lots of picture books, had scintillating, philosophical discussions after reading books like Frederick by Leo Leonni, and had fun researching animals using Pebble Go database!  The getting geeky characteristic  with Pebble Go is you can print off your production, or share as a URL straight from your iPad!

Reading Buddies students share their joy in creation after reading a great picture book like Don’t Spill the Milk by Stephen Davies! Here are a few samples of artistic creation!

“Creating an eBook online is no rocket science and anyone with the rudimentary knowledge of how to use internet can get his/her eBook up and viral in a couple of minutes provided the content part of it is already written in a word document. I find the typing and editing part the most  difficult stage in this process;  however, if you just want to set up a short ebook for your students then that would not take you much time.

Just a couple of weeks ago I shared here in Educational Technology and Mobile Learning a list of great apps  to use to create eBooks on iPad and I received several emails following that post and some of you asked for tutorials on this topic. “f you like to use your iPhone, iPad or laptop in your classroom because it allows you to effortlessly navigate the learning space, one of the greatest frustrations can be having to constrain yourself to the vicinity of the projector cable every time you want to share your screen with the class.

I have seen this as a common practice even in open plan learning environments, which instantly does away with it’s greatest feature by forcing the teacher to move back to the front of the room.

Whilst you can get wireless projectors at great expense, have you ever thought of using Apple’s $99 Apple TV? I hadn’t until recently, but since using it I could never go back to a physical projector/tv connection for the following 4 reasons:

We are doing this in our learning commons and once you get the hang of it, it makes a lot of sense.  Students can be screencast at any time, and our digital reader will show the book on the screen as it is being read!
