New Account info!

New client codes/pins have been sent via email to all parents and teachers who have 2016/17 accounts in Encom. These emails were generated by L4U on Monday, so please check your junk folder if you don’t see them in your inbox. The old accounts have been deleted.

Items out

All items out are due back June 17th unless you arranged a renewal (no unit study kits will be renewed).  Please contact Kelly to arrange pickup: shipping@heritagechristian.ca

Unit Study kits:

  • If you have kits out, they are due back June 17th. They cannot be renewed over the summer.
  • Unit Study Kits are being redone to meet the new outcomes, so they cannot be booked over the summer OR for next year at this time.
  • We will announce the date they will be available to be booked in August, most likely August 15th.

Summer Loans

  • You can book curriculum, books and CDs/DVDs for the summer and next year, (but not unit study kits).
  • Last day to book items for the summer is June 17th.  Books will be shipped the following week.
  • Summer items will be due back in August.

Changes to Loans and Shipping

  • The Loan period is now 6 weeks as the new unit study kits will be shorter in length. You can use the materials for the full 6 weeks as shipping time is calculated outside of that time.
  • New limit of 35 books and 8 AV items out at one time per family.
  • Enrolled families now receive 16 FREE shipments (8 round trips) per school year (August – July)
  • Registered families now receive 10 Free Shipments (5 round trips) per school year (August –July)
  • Registered families will now have access to Overdrive, and most materials in L4U except MakerEd and Unit Study kits. Access to Digital kits and all guides is available here.

If you have moved – please contact either Kelly or myself with your new address as we do not get automatic updates from the office.  It’s so sad when an order goes to the wrong address and time is lost trying to get it back!!

Celebrate Shakespeare’s Birthday with us!

We are not one hundred percent sure when Shakespeare was born, but we celebrate his birthday on April 23rd. Here are some facts about Shakespeare. There is very little known about Shakespeare, which has spawned many conspiracies about him and his life. You can watch one video called The Shakespeare Conspiracy here.

Many of his plays are available in our Learn 360 subscription. You can watch Romeo and Juliet (in Ballet form), Othello, The Taming of the Shrew, Antony and Cleopatra, King Richard II, The Tempest, Romeo and Juliet (in play form), Macbeth and The Merry Wives of Windsor. You can also find several videos about Shakespeare’s poetry and the Globe Theatre. In Discovery Education you can find WordPlay Shakespeare, which includes the play alongside the original and modern Texts. There is Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. You can also find Standard Deviants Shakespeare Tragedies in Discovery Education with great explanations of all of Shakespeare’s great tragedies.

Discover Shakespeare resources for all ages in our L4U library: several retellings of Shakespeare Plays; Irresistible Shakespeare, which includes several Readers Theatre Scripts; The World of Shakespeare; Shakespeare and the Globe,  and several audio retellings of Shakespeare.

In Overdrive we recently added a range of study guides for you, the texts can be found at Project Gutenberg which you can access from our Overdrive site.

The Plays the Thing

For more information about Shakespeare read The Play’s the Thing by Ruth Turk

Gary Blackwood

And if you are looking for a springboard to Shakespeare, Gary Blackwood’s books are great options: The Shakespeare Stealer and The Shakespeare Scribe.

If you are wanting to study Shakespeare with younger children I would suggest using the following:

Beautiful Stories from Shakespeare by Edith Nesbit

Tales from Shakespeare by Charles and Mary Lamb

And finally a few great resources for all students are Video SparkNotes for Shakespeare  and these note booking pages for Shakespeare plays.

Have fun exploring Shakespeare!

Client Codes and PINS for L4U Library and Overdrive

As we prepare for the new school year, we are receiving lots of requests for access to the L4U library, which offers books, curriculum and unit study kits, and Overdrive, our E-library which also offers curriculum and books!

If you had an account with us last year, your client code and pin remain unchanged.

If you are new to HCOS, you will receive your client code and pin in an email sent from L4U. It is important that you add L4U to your safe senders list and/or check your JUNK folder for the info. Your students will also receive emails – the email is sent to the email address supplied by you when you enrolled them. We will be adding new patrons weekly until October, so please watch for the email!

One client code/pin – TWO libraries!

Important Notes:
1. Only one LIBRARY account is set up per family, under the parent’s name. However each parent and student will be sent a client code and password. Students cannot book items in the physical library; all items must be booked through the parent account. However, Students can access e-books through Overdrive!
2. SAVE your new client code and pin! *You can log in using your LAST NAME instead of the client code!!
3. To learn how to use the new L4U system and learn about our shipping guidelines, visit: How to use the library.
4. Go to the library webpage at L4U library and log in.
5. You can access Overdrive details here: Overdrive
6. Please don’t hesitate to contact Shandra Wiebe swiebe@onlineschool.ca regarding the L4U library or Pippa Davies should you have any queries regarding the E Library.

Did You Know?

Our Overdrive E library has really been a happening place this last month with stats increasing over 100%.  WOW!!  Who knew e-text books, novels and downloadable workbooks could be so providential 😀

WHAT I did not know that we had curriculum on our e Library?”  How do I get it??!

We ask that you first watch this video please?

There are several places we are adding new e kits to our Overdrive library.  This month we welcomed Rachael Freed to our learning commons as a curriculum writer to help us bridge the 2014 and 2015 learning outcomes with reliable e kits!  Her first e kit is Needs of Plants and Animals for Kindergarten/Grade 1  You will find this kit and more in the coming year under

HOMESCHOOLING RESOURCES and then

Downloadable Overdrive Unit Studies.

Our learning commons team has started writing themed material units, to help bridge some of the seasonal learning which happens throughout the year.  As these materials are shared we are archiving them in this place under the tab

E BOOK LIBRARY  and then

We would love to help you get started using our E Library.  You can watch the archived video on using our learning commons which happened in the fall at this link here:

Exciting Announcement!! Correlated Teacher Materials in Overdrive Library!!

Screen Shot 2014-01-29 at 9.44.02 AM

This month we have worked very hard in the Learning Commons to offer our patrons a range of teacher materials and non-fiction titles for the specifics of meeting learning outcomes. These titles have been correlated to the new 2015 BC ministry outcomes, but that doesn’t mean you can’t start using them today!! Many of the topics will remain the same and others have changed ever so slightly in year that you will be able to use these materials with ease. If you check the Collection Tab you will find these catageries;  Bible, K-1, 2-3, 4-5 and 6-7.  But you can also search via topic using the search function.

We have many titles for science and social studies,  and we have added in novel studies as well as general language arts materials.

This is an exciting way that our families can access unit studies, teacher guides, hands on ideas for science and social studies and non fiction books to round out their studies!

Pippa has created a great video to guide you through Overdrive and our new materials.

If you are needing assistance with your Overdrive account please contact us at the Learning Commons.

We trust that this will bless you in your homeschool adventures!!

Blessings from the Learning Commons team!
