How to Use the L4U Physical Library

We pray and trust our HCOS families will enjoy these physical resources.   We encourage parents to supervise their students’ reading activities.  If you have any concerns with resources do not hesitate to contact your support teacher of Pippa Davies our chair of learning commons.”

Enrolled students 

The first thing you will need to access our L4U  (Library for YOU!) catalogue is a username and password. When your student enrols with our school their information is loaded to Encom (school database) and then imported to L4U, our library catalogue.  This may take up to two weeks.  If you still have not received your passwords, (check your junk email too),  please contact Shandra Wiebe swiebe@onlineschool.ca with your full name, address, and phone number to get started. Parents are also given an account.

Registered Students

Registered students may also use the learning commons.  To find out what resources are available to them please click on this link.

Important Note: Be sure to Log In to L4U under your PARENT account. Students cannot book items in L4U, but they can book ebooks in the OverDrive Library.

Renewing Items Online You can renew kits and books if no one else has booked them. Back to back bookings are not allowed. Please respect the 7 week loan period so other families can access the materials.

Shipping guidelines

Once you have contacted Shandra Wiebe swiebe@onlineschool.ca or Kelly Wiebe HCS shipping@heritagechristian.ca to get started, follow these notes:

Important Notes:

  • Only one LIBRARY account is set up per family, under the parent’s name. However each parent and student will be sent a client code and password; save them in a file. *Students cannot book items in the physical library; all items must be booked through the parent account. However, they can access e-books through OverDrive!
  • Student information is sent to the address on file with Encom, so if students have their own email account, the email will be sent to them, not the parent’s email.  If you need your username urgently please contact Shandra Wiebe swiebe@onlineschool.ca

Please Note! These codes are for both the physical library and the OverDrive E-Library.
One password – TWO libraries!

  • Go to the library webpage at L4U Library and log in.
  • Client codes and passwords are sent out automatically once per month to all new families who have enrolled that month. Please check your email junk folder if the email from the L4U system does not arrive in the first week of the month.

 

Loan Periods, Limits and Renewals for Enrolled patrons:

The Learning Commons offers 16 FREE shipments per family per school year (August – July) for Enrolled users. That is one shipment every 7 weeks plus one extra per school year. Once the limit is reached, the enrolled family is responsible for paying 50% of the shipping cost which can paid be from student funding.

Loan period is seven weeks which does NOT include shipping time. You have the FULL seven weeks to use the material!
• Unit Study Kits: there is a limit of 3 per family out at one time, and only one kit per subject and grade. ie. One grade 5 science kit and one grade 5 socials kit would be allowed, but not two grade 5 science kits out at once.
• There is a limit of 8 media items which includes DVDs, CDs and CDroms.
• Total limit of all items per shipment is 35.
• You can renew items online if no one else has put a hold on them and there are no fines on your account, (so renew them before they are overdue!).
• You can delete bookings and modify dates online.

  • The Learning Commons offers 10 FREE shipments per family per school year (August – July) . Once the limit is reached registered families pay the whole cost of shipping.
  • Loan period is seven weeks which does NOT include shipping time. You have the FULL seven weeks to use the material!
  • Registered families have access to all resources in L4U except the Unit Study kits and Special Education Department material. Access include curriculum, DVDs, fiction, special education general items and supplemental kits.
  • Registered families now have access to OverDrive!
  • There is a limit of 8 media items which includes DVDs, CDs and CDroms.
    • Total limit of all items per shipment is 35.
    • You can renew items online if no one else has put a hold on them and there are no fines on your account, (so renew them before they are overdue!).
    • You can delete bookings and modify dates online.

 Shipping:

If you plan to move, or have moved, you must contact the library directly. Just email us with your address change at the same time you send information to the HCOS office. We do not receive updates from the office, so it is your responsibility to notify us! This will ensure your order is not lost or delayed do to the wrong address!

Families are also responsible for paying for postage to return DVDs, CDs and small items that can be sent by lettermail.
To make the most of your shipments:

  • Order items in groups for one 7 week period
  • Do not order one small item ie. CD at a time
  • Book items well in advance – you can book items up to a year in advance, from September to June. You can book items over the summer if you have re-enrolled and email Shandra to confirm: swiebe@onlineschool.ca

 If you live outside of courier service area, we will ship by Canada Post. The family is responsible for paying for the items to be shipped back, but enrolled families can submit their receipts to the library and have the amount credited to their funding account. Registered families will not be reimbursed. The limit of 16 free shipments still applies for enrolled families.

  • Items must be packaged in bubble or tyvek envelopes (save the packaging the items were sent in!)
  •  NO paper envelopes as they rip too easily.  Boxes are also a good choice.    Items damaged due to poor packaging will be billed to your account.
  • Local families, please drop off your items at the campus library. Please be aware that we have classes in the mornings.
