Sixth-grade social studies is a broad and challenging year. Six grade learners have the opportunity to explore fascinating, globally relevant, topics and ideas throughout each of the Learning Commons’ Social Studies Kits. Learners will discover issues that impact people around the world, what it means to be a global citizen, how conflict affects people’s lives, how minority groups are treated throughout the world, and what we can do to make a difference! Opportunities for student-directed projects, inquiry-based learning, research, technology use, and exploration of a variety of media is integrated throughout each kit.

Topics explored in our sixth-grade social studies kits include urbanization, migration, the treatment of minority groups, government systems and economics, global issues and media, and conflict and war. Each kit also integrates concepts in numeracy, literacy, art, technology, and design thinking! Kits can be completed in any order based on student interest and availability of materials.

On the whole, sixth-grade social studies kits follow an identical format to the kits found in K-5. They continue to be designed for completion over a period of 6-8 weeks depending on the number of activities selected. Owing to the breadth and depth of the Conflict and War kit, we chose to make certain structural changes to allow for even greater freedom of choice for families. In this kit, you will find opportunities for students to select the books they read, and then select activities connected with that specific set of books. They will also complete one novel study while completing the kit.

The remaining sixth grade kits are divided into sections based around driving questions. You will work through each kit section by choosing your own materials, projects and activities to create a unique learning experience for your child. We have worked diligently to choose an array of exciting learning opportunities for every learner! The materials, projects, and activities contained in the kit have been carefully selected to address the big ideas, competencies, and content of BC’s Modernized Curriculum.
