Physical Unit Studies - What is available right now?

Good news!  Not all of the physical unit studies are booked out!  We have some wonderful unit studies available right now or in the next couple of weeks, so if you couldn’t book them earlier, try again!  Some units are fully booked for the year, but if you are local to Kelowna or within 2 shipping days, we can sometimes squeeze in a shorter loan period. Just contact us and ask us to check if there is availability.

Here are a few units I would like to highlight:

Kindergarten:

Motion of Objects: Much like kindergartners, objects in our world tend to move! In this kit you will be exploring motion alongside your child! The focus of this kit is on making objects move! Build a hovercraft, design a car and race it, splatter paint on a canvas, drop an egg from a second story window, and much more! You will be able to read engaging books, watch fun and fantastic videos, play games, make crafts, and choose from dozens of projects to create the ultimate self-directed learning experience for your kindergartener!

Grade 1

Local Environments: Explore the extraordinary local environment all around us! Discover the industries that thrive in British Columbia including forestry, fishing, mining, and farming! Opportunities for learning include geocaching, hiking, building a lapbook, investigating a pond, creating a rainforest in a jar, build an ecosystem, brainstorm ways to care for the environment, compare and contrast urban and rural communities, and much more! You will be able to read engaging books, watch fun and fantastic videos, play games, make crafts, and choose from dozens of projects to create the ultimate self-directed learning experience for your first grader.

Grade 2

Local Actions Have Global Consequences: The world is a complex place, in this fascinating unit, you and your child will begin exploring our actions, and how our actions can impact others. You will investigate the decisions made in your community and country, and learn about how those decisions impact others. Learn about giving back, volunteering, and donating, make a papier mache globe, listen to world music, perform random acts of kindness, write a country report, research endangered species, build a diorama, play recycling games, and much more! You will be able to read engaging books, watch fun and fantastic videos, play games, make crafts, and choose from dozens of projects to create the ultimate self-directed learning experience for your second grader.

Grade 4

Solids, Liquids, and Gases: Increase your child’s knowledge of matter in this investigative unit all about solids, liquids, and gases! In this unit you will be able to design your own experiment, create a cornstarch suspension, grow egg geodes, erupt a volcano, make stained glass sugar, grow crystals, create chemical reactions with Kool-Aid, make bouncy balls, bake a cake, and much more! You will be able to read engaging books, watch fun and fantastic videos, play games, make crafts, and choose from dozens of projects to create the ultimate self-directed learning experience for your fourth grader.

Grade 5

Natural Resources: Our world is filled with incredible diversity and richness! Throughout the world, people make use of natural resources. In British Columbia, we are fortunate to have an abundance of natural resources! In this investigative unit, students and parents will be able to select from an assortment of activities to learn more about natural resources from both a scientific perspective and a social studies perspective. You will be able to design your own experiment, experiment with water, build a 3D earth model, create a model water-cycle, design and build an aquifer, explore the trees of British Columbia, grow crystals, invent a solution for a global issue, conduct a personal inquiry, chart Canada’s natural resources, participate in an aquaculture debate, and much more! You will be able to read engaging books, watch fun and fantastic videos, play games, make crafts, and choose from dozens of projects to create the ultimate self-directed learning experience for your fifth grader.

Chemistry: Chemistry is fascinating! Students love experimenting with chemicals to create all sorts of reactions–including explosions! Safe explosions, that is. In this hands-on unit you will learn more about solutions! You will be able to design an experiment, locate homogeneous solutions, grow a beautiful crystal tree, make your own pH tester paper, conduct experiments with red cabbage, dissolve M&M’s, play with solubility, crush materials, combine materials, and much more! You will be able to read engaging books, watch fun and fantastic videos, play games, make crafts, and choose from dozens of projects to create the ultimate self-directed learning experience for your fifth grader.

Grade 6

Conflict and War: Sixth grade focuses on the modern world, and introduces an array of diverse and complex topics. In this kit, students and parents will select books to read from an assortment of different topic headings including war and conflict, genocide, religious and ethnic violence, children of war, and terrorism. Each topic heading provides opportunities for reading books and watching videos, along with engaging response activities. Students will also be able to select one novel to complete a study on! Students will be provided with opportunities to conduct research, watch videos, learn new technology skills, watch fascinating videos, build timelines, write poetry, create artwork, become a journalist, create a comic strip, write journal entries, analyze conflicts, design solutions to global problems, plan to make a difference, and much more!

Grade 7

Inca, Aztec, & Maya: Explore the incredible world of the Inca, Aztec, and Maya in this engaging mini-unit. Students will begin by learning about each of this fascinating civilizations before selecting one civilization to engage with in-depth. You will be able to watch videos, explore interactives, propose a research project, and create a presentation or project of your choosing!

Grade 8

Middle Ages: Move forward in history and discover the Middle Ages! This unique and engaging unit will provide students with the opportunity to self-direct their learning! Students will read assigned books, select a novel to study, and and keep an ongoing portfolio of their learning in the form of website! Students will be able to use the question formulation technique throughout the unit to design their own questions based on what interests them. This will allow for a truly personalized learning experience!

The materials, projects, and activities contained in the kit have been carefully selected to address the big ideas, competencies, and content of BC’s Modernized Curriculum.

Renaissance: Discover the incredible Renaissance! This unique and engaging unit will provide students with the opportunity to self-direct their learning! Students will read assigned books, select a novel to study, and keep an ongoing portfolio of their learning in the form of a website! Students will be able to use the question formulation technique throughout the unit to design their own questions based on what interests them. This will allow for a truly personalized learning experience!

Grade 9

Industrial Revolution:

Discover the fascinating world of the Industrial Revolution! The Industrial Revolution saw the rise of industrialization, globalization, and modern business networks throughout the world, and transformed the way we work, play, and live! In this fascinating unit you will have the opportunity to read engaging books, watch videos, explore interactive exhibits, and create your own exploratory project.

Students will be able to create their own self-directed research project using pre-developed questions, or by creating their own question to explore. Students will then be able to present their learning in the style that appeals to them! As a special addition to this unit, a hands-on building project will also be incorporated.

World War I:

The Great War, World War I, the war that changed the way we fight, the way we interact on a global scale, and set into motion of the events that led to World War II, will be examined in-depth in this fascinating unit. Students will learn the many intricacies of this horrific conflict between nations, walk in the footsteps of leaders, explore ideologies, and much more. Throughout the unit students will have the opportunity to watch videos, read books, explore interactive exhibits, and design their own project.
